Dermatology Multimedia Research Data Manager
This STRIDE-based system was commissioned in 2003 by Dr. Alfred Lane, Professor and Chairman of the Dermatology Department and has been in production use since 2004. As of October 2007 the repository catalogues over 5,000 images from over 800 patients with over 40 active users, who are dermatologists and dermatology residents. The system's primary function is to aggregate, for research purposes, digital photographs of various skin conditions seen during the course of clinical care. These images are used to document the progress of the condition and the efficacy of treatment.
One of the baseline requirements for the system was the ability to search for photographs by both patient diagnosis and per-photo keyword annotations. The photo finder feature of this application permits users to assemble search terms from a left hand side picklist and specify the query for the search. For example, step one is to select 'Photo Annotated Disease' from the picklist, then specify 'Hemangioma' as the value to be searched on. All photos matching the supplied search terms are returned, regardless as to the patient they are associated with, which is a useful feature in performing cross-patient comparisons.
The side by side image viewer is a recent enhancement to the system. Modeled on the Windows image viewer, the side by side viewer takes over the entire screen and lets users rotate, reposition, zoom in and out, and show or hide annotations.
