STRIDE Anonymous Patient Cohort Discovery Tool Beta Test

On Monday April 23 2007, the Center for Clinical Informatics will commence a seven week beta-test of the STRIDE Anonymous Patient Cohort Discovery Tool. This computer program allows Stanford University School of Medicine faculty researchers, who have PI privileges, to query STRIDE's clinical data warehouse (CDW) of patient demographics and clinical observations from Stanford University Medical Center (SUMC - both LPCH and SHC). The program is designed to help answer the question "might a cohort of SUMC patients with these characteristics exist in the STRIDE CDW?". This may be an important step in clinical research project planning, possibly leading to chart review and perhaps an IRB proposal that seeks access to clinical data for research purposes.

The STRIDE Anonymous Patient Cohort Discovery Tool does not expose any individual patient identifiers or clinical data but instead uses criteria such as patient demographics, ICD-coded diagnosis, ICD and CPT-coded clinical procedures, contents of clinical documents and selected laboratory test results to determine the approximate size of anonymous patient cohorts. Access to patient cohort clinical information, for research purposes, will require Stanford IRB approval.

The seven week beta test is largely focused on evaluating the ease of use and human interface model of the STRIDE Anonymous Patient Cohort Discovery Tool program. While the beta test system searches a substantial subset of the STRIDE CDW archive, not all clinical data is included in the test (see the on-line beta test user documentation for a description of the data being searched). At the end of the beta test period, registered users will be asked to complete a short on-line survey and invited to provide feedback. We will be doing extensive work on the STRIDE CDW over the Summer, with a goal of releasing the STRIDE Anonymous Patient Cohort Discovery Tool as a service to faculty in October 2007.

We will be contacting eligible Stanford faculty at the School in mid- April to invite their participation in this beta test. A more detailed description of the STRIDE Anonymous Patient Cohort Discovery Tool is available at http://clinicalinformatics.stanford.edu/STRIDE/cohort-beta/help/ or you can download a View large image PDF file of the STRIDE Anonymous Patient Cohort Discovery Tool beta test user documentation here.
