The STRIDE Clinical Data Warehouse

Clinical Data Warehouse

The STRIDE Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW) receives data electronically from Stanford's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (LPCH) and Stanford's adult hospital, Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC). The data stored in the CDW includes patient demographics, coded diagnoses and procedures, laboratory test results, surgical pathology reports, radiology reports and many other clinical documents. The CDW is built on the Oracle 10g platform and uses a database schema derived from the HL7 Reference Information Model (RIM). Core data elements in the CDW are represented using standardized biomedical terminologies, such as SNOMED-CT, ICD, CPT and RxNorm. The Clinical Data Warehouse is an important foundation of the entire STRIDE project, supporting anonymous cohort queries, integration with STRIDE research databases and tissue banks, as well as extraction of historical clinical data sets. The CDW fills a critical need within the School’s clinical and translational support infrastructure by providing HIPPA-compliant access to clinical data for research purposes. As a shared data warehouse for both clinical and research data, the STRIDE CDW removes important barriers to the interdisciplinary flow of research information. In designing the CDW, the Center for Clinical Informatics was careful to address the security and privacy challenges posed by handling clinical data. As a result, the CDW contains numerous mechanisms to ensure that all protected health information is handled in strict accordance with HIPAA, and other relevant regulations.

The data in the STRIDE Clinical Data Warehouse is available to Stanford faculty for use in IRB-approved research projects. To access the Clinical Data Warehouse request a free Informatics Consultation or use the STRIDE self-service Anonymous Patient Cohort Identification Tool.
